LINDSAY, ON - (NATURALWIRE) -- Educational institutions are becoming more energy efficient than ever, thanks to help from the Government of Canada. The Honourable R. John Efford, Minister of Natural Resources Canada, today congratulated Sir Sandford Fleming College's Frost Campus for its new environmental technology wing.
The new wing boasts a number of significant energy-efficiency and renewable-energy design features, including a high-performance building envelope and lighting system and ground‑source heat pumps to heat and cool the space. This building was designed to perform at 66 percent above the requirements of the Model National Energy Code for Buildings (MNECB), making it one of the most energy-efficient building designs in Canada. The estimated annual energy savings, compared to an MNECB design, are more than $36,000. This makes Sir Sandford Fleming College an environmental leader in its field.
"I am very impressed with Sir Sandford Fleming College for making this new wing so exemplary with respect to its environmentally friendly technologies," said Minister Efford. "The Government of Canada is pleased to provide support for energy-efficient buildings like this one because they help reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change and, at the same time, reduce energy costs."
The College received $60,000 toward the design of this energy-efficient building through Natural Resources Canada's Commercial Building Incentive Program (CBIP). This is the third project for Sir Sandford Fleming College that has qualified under CBIP. The Applied Computing and Engineering Science Building on the Peterborough campus and the Haliburton Campus Building on the Haliburton campus were the two other projects that received funding. In six years, CBIP has supported more than 420 buildings across Canada.
CBIP offers financial incentives for incorporating energy-efficiency features into new commercial, institutional and multi-unit residential building designs that are at least 25 percent more efficient than a reference building that complies with the MNECB. Further details on CBIP, a program within Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency, can be found on the Internet at www.oee.nrcan.gc.ca/newbuildings.
The Government of Canada's approach to climate change is focused on making the right choices for Canada. This will ensure that the actions taken contribute to the long-term goals of building a sustainable economy for the 21st century, a healthier environment and strong communities, while affirming Canada's place in the world.
