Dec 19. /Natural Newswire/ -- In spite of national public outcry calling for Montana to cancel its illegitimate bison hunt, the state's zero-tolerance policy against the country's last wild bison continues and resulted in another bison death on Sunday in Gardiner, Montana, just outside the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park.

A group of nearly 16 individuals attended a single bison hunter near Gardiner over the weekend on his quest for a "trophy" bull bison. The party conducted extensive reconnaissance of bison in the area and on Sunday killed the biggest bull bison they could find.

Sixteen of seventeen non-Indian permits have been filled during the first phase of Montana's bison hunt, which ends January 15, 2006. The Crow Nation has rejected the two permits offered to them by the state. Other tribes may make similar decisions.

WEST YELLOWSTONE & GARDINER, MT. Dec 12. /Natural Newswire/ -- Montana's zero-tolerance policy against the country's last wild bison resulted in another bison death and increased bison harassment activities over the weekend by hunters and government agents.

On Friday in West Yellowstone, a 14-year-old girl killed a wild buffalo less than half a mile from Yellowstone National Park. The buffalo was shot just yards from the Duck Creek Bison Trap, on the private property of Dale Koelzer, a landowner who hosts the Department of Livestock (DOL)-run bison trap. On Thursday, Buffalo Field Campaign representatives witnessed DOL agents off-loading a semi trailer full of hay at the property where no cows or horses live.

"Are DOL agents using this enormous amount of hay to lure hungry buffalo into unwelcome territory so that they can invite so-called hunters to shoot them like fish in a barrel? " questioned Stephany Seay, a coordinator with the wild bison advocacy group Buffalo Field Campaign. "Or are the livestock inspectors gearing up for a heavy season of capturing the country's last wild bison just as soon as their canned hunt is over?"

The Buffalo Field Campaign opposes Montana's bison hunt because wild buffalo have no protected habitat in Montana and are never allowed in the state without being captured, slaughtered, shot, or harassed.

A total of seventeen wild bull bison have been killed in Montana this fall. Fourteen have been shot by Montana hunters, two by Montana's Department of Livestock, and another bull was shot by a Yellowstone National Park ranger within Park boundaries. In the past ten years the state of Montana and the federal government have killed 2,474 wild Yellowstone bison, more than half of the existing herd.

Six More Bull Buffalo Killed In Montana's Canned Hunt

GARDINER, MT. Dec 5. /Natural Newswire/ -- Since last Tuesday, November 29, Montana's new bison hunt resulted in the deaths of six more of America's last wild buffalo. Five of the bulls were killed near Gardiner, Montana, directly adjacent to Yellowstone National Park and one was killed near West Yellowstone. The Gardiner region is part of the largest wildlife migration corridor in North America.
