Organic Pastured Poultry and Beef Farm Walk May 5, Stokesberrry Sustainable Farms, Olympia

Jerry_stokesberry April 23, 2008 /Natural Newswire/ -- Tour an on-farm certified Washington State Department of Agriculture processing facility and learn successful direct marketing techniques in an upcoming Farm Walk in Olympia.

Stokesberry Sustainable Farms features over ten thousand Certified Organic hens and broilers per year, one hundred white and heritage turkeys, and several heads of cattle which serve as a unique pasture rotation system in addition to being marketed.

“The on-farm WSDA certified poultry processing facility is a real asset,” explained Kirsten Workman, Washington State University Small Farms Extension Educator. “This is a small farm with two people running it. They will explain the process and requirements to get their facility built to certification and how they run their farm from the field to market,” said Workman. Jerry and Janelle Stokesberry have been selling to chefs, consumers, and food co-ops and will provide information about their marketing strategy.

Home-built chicken tractors and a greenhouse winter shelter will also be featured. Visitors will also hear about the greenhouse crop system production planned for next year.

The Farm Tour is Monday, May 5 from Noon – 3:30. The cost is $10.00 for Tilth Producer members and $15.00 for non-members. Register on-site or pre-register by mailing a check to Tilth Producers, PO Box 85056, Seattle, WA 98145. A barbeque chicken potluck will be held at noon. Beverages provided. Everyone is welcome.
